Overland Park Racecourse was situated in Denver on what is now Overland Golf Course, and can trace its history back to 1887. However, four years previous the Denver Circle Railroad Company was keen to buy land and farms in the area, developing a racetrack on some of the land. They called the racecourse Jewell Park, after Charles Jewell, one of the major investors in the railroad and the racecourse. In 1887 Henry Wolcott bought Jewell Park from the other shareholders and set about renaming it Overland Park. The Jockey Club was formed and Overland Racecourse came into being. A Denver directory of 1892 lists the Superintendent of the Overland Jockey Club as James H Temple. Further evidence exists of a Grand Summer Meeting taking place in 1908 which was organised by the Overland Jockey Club. In due course the racing ceased and the former course was transformed into the Denver Country Club and Golf Course.
